Don't wanna watch the colonial glorifying blue people movie? Check out these sci-fi films by actual Indigenous people telling our own stories instead. đ§”

Fair and valid criticism. I love Reservation Dogs, but there are issues that shouldn't be swept under the rug because it makes us uncomfortable or for the sake of representation. https://t.co/1G6n98gP05

would you still consider yourself Native if your tribe took away your citizenship card?
— Sarah Gray (@notsarahgray) March 19, 2022
an "Indian card" or tribal citizenship is NOT what makes a person Native. "Indian" in the U.S. is a legal political status. identifying as Native is more complex than settler-colonial standards of belonging. @GovStitt is legally "Indian" but hes not Native.

We are not undermining sovereignty. We are shining a light on how fragile egos combined with unchallenged political power creates corrupted tribal nations. #EndDisenrollment

I think what bothers me the most about the anti Blackness of Reservation Dogs is how long it took anyone to say anything. How full my feed was of Natives loving it uncritically.

This is really upsetting.
With the help of 100 yrs of film/tv, we’ve normalized Euro-mixed Natives as the authentic representation of Indigenous people. Which is fine. Being white-mixed *is* a normal Indigenous experience. But it’s no more representative than darker Brown Natives or Black-mixed Natives.

Being fierce for all of us means being fierce for Black Native relatives, especially the Freedmen that you have harmed by supporting and passing policy that exclused them and by refusing to listen and work with them. https://t.co/CLcvSQiwHK

Many times, I have heard the argument that either the federal government or Freedmen themselves are trying to “force the Freedmen onto their tribes.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Tribal slave-owners forced our ancestors into these tribes and these communities.

Hey Americans,
— Ol’ Tiny Rez Dog (@DeadDogLake) September 10, 2020
There is a *major* difference between *being* indigenous and having indigenous *ancestry*. For instance, I have Cree ancestry and Irish ancestry but I am *not* Cree, nor am I Irish. See how easy that is... I do not speak for the Cree people, nor the Irish

When scholars, even progressive ones, refuse to acknowledge this, when they refuse to accept or even engage with Indigenous criticism and theory, we need to recognize what’s going on.

There's that distinct divide of a lot of poets/academics (not all) who hide behind cultural "I am more Native than thou!" fundamentalism that insists we must be protected from art. https://t.co/F82uAtoPik
It’s weird to me when people are like “but they didn’t grow up Indigenous” as a way to undermine someone’s Indigeneity. Like the entire point of colonization was to eradicate our communities, cultures and identities. It doesn’t make us less Indigenous.
— Carrington Christmas (@carrchristmas) May 28, 2021
This is something that has been bothering me with Keeler’s list. She will invalidate people based on if their community claims them but this usually centers on the major heads of the community. But they will not know everyone.

Getting rid of every single pretendian isn’t going to (I think) strengthen our sovereignty… changing our rolls to include all our people does (without a doubt) strengthen our Sovereignty
— Ol’ Shaggy Rez Dog (@DeadDogLake) June 17, 2021
I don’t trust anyone who is all energized about ‘pretendians’ but remain silent on enrollment (Disenrollment and blood quantum). They are telling you something, loud and clear.

In 1849 it was transferred to the newly formed Department of the Interior. So diplomatic relations w/ Indigenous Nations went from being managed by the military to being managed alongside land, fish and animals.
