an "Indian card" or tribal citizenship is NOT what makes a person Native. "Indian" in the U.S. is a legal political status. identifying as Native is more complex than settler-colonial standards of belonging. @GovStitt is legally "Indian" but hes not Native.

I think what bothers me the most about the anti Blackness of Reservation Dogs is how long it took anyone to say anything. How full my feed was of Natives loving it uncritically.

With the help of 100 yrs of film/tv, we’ve normalized Euro-mixed Natives as the authentic representation of Indigenous people. Which is fine. Being white-mixed *is* a normal Indigenous experience. But it’s no more representative than darker Brown Natives or Black-mixed Natives.

Many times, I have heard the argument that either the federal government or Freedmen themselves are trying to “force the Freedmen onto their tribes.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Tribal slave-owners forced our ancestors into these tribes and these communities.

In 1849 it was transferred to the newly formed Department of the Interior. So diplomatic relations w/ Indigenous Nations went from being managed by the military to being managed alongside land, fish and animals.

I do not like the whole “your tribe must claim you” argument because there are many tribes on the east coast that have disenrolled their Black-Native tribal members and barred their descendants from enrolling.
