VETT 2126 - Practicum: Animal Clinics and Nursing

Development of practical veterinary nursing skills development in an approved work site, for a minimum of 316 hours.  Active participation through independent in-clinic work, online assignments, and in-class presentations. Students will work directly under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian while applying skills acquired from previous academic preparation. The student, sponsor, and program director will develop a written competency-based learning plan with specific learning objectives.

VETT 2125 Practicum: Animal Clinics and Nursing Videos

Objectives

  • Observe the behavior and condition of animals
  • Provide nursing care or emergency first aid to recovering or injured animals
  • Bathe animals, clip nails or claws, and brush or cut animals’ hair
  • Restrain animals during exams or procedures
  • Administer anesthesia to animals and monitor their responses
  • Take x rays and collect and perform laboratory tests, such as urinalyses and blood counts
  • Prepare animals and instruments for surgery
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments prescribed by a veterinarian
  • Collect and record animals’ case histories
