U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission: Special Topics Annual Report: Women in STEMThough their numbers have been growing in recent decades, women make up only 26 percent of employed scientists, with minority women representing only 11 percent of that total. There are especially broad gender gaps in some of the fastest growing and highest paid industries, such as computer science and engineering. Given the need for creative responses to modern day trends such as terrorism, pandemics, climate change, and an increasingly diverse U.S. population, it is imperative that both the federal government and the private sector diversify their STEM workforces to respond effectively to problems both at home and abroad.
