This session focuses on classroom dynamics and student engagement. We will explore ways to examine the classroom setting and the importance of moving beyond a one-stop shop approach to equitable practice. Participants will engage in a brief exercise/discussion designed to explore strategies for more equitable student engagement.

This presentation will explore different ways to engage your students over Zoom. The participant will learn how to use simple Zoom features that will enable students to participate in active learning. Additional active learning strategies will be discussed that can be utilized in any class modality.

I developed a podcast called Sharing Passion and Purpose a little over a year ago in part because my TCC students seemed to be so interested in the guest speakers that I would bring to the classroom. It is also an innovative way to present people who are passionate about their careers - following their passion and purpose! Thinking about a way that all my students could continue to listen to these amazing guests sparked a thought that I should be recording them. This idea has turned into a podcast that I publish on a weekly basis! Because many of our students don’t know what path they want to focus on, it helps students hear from people who enjoy their careers and hopefully produces some ah-ha moments! It also serves to inspire others who are in a “tough” point in their careers to know that everyone goes through difficult times but can come through with lessons learned. Will discuss: The basics of how to record a podcast and the way my podcast is structured and opportunities to incorporate it into the course curriculum. We are teaching in an era of "flipped", "high-flex", "technology-enhanced", "blended" classrooms, with expectations for "no more lecturing" and "high student engagement". And, yet students are coming to class less and less prepared and expecting us to teach them more and more of the material. This semester, I am trying something new (well, everything new actually). I am teaching a high-flex, blended, flipped class. I am using 3-2-1 entry-exit tickets to engage students in our face-to-face sessions. I am using Zoom and owl cameras to livestream class for high-flex option. I am using Blackboard to collect the entry-exit tickets. I am recording my lectures and not lecturing during class. Join this session to learn what these tickets are, how I'm using them, how I'm doing all of this, and to see how it's going.

Join Heather Wilburn and Doug Price for a discussion focused on the infusion of undergraduate research and global learning in an Honors section of Humanities I. Bina Sengar, our collaborative partner, will be joining the session from India. One of the great challenges of teaching is to keep students motivated and actively engaged during lectures and out of class. With the use of these two applications that I mention in the title, I have achieved that students have a greater participation not only in classes, but also in the non-face-to-face form. Quizziz allows the inclusion of questions, with an immediate feedback to students, as well as access to online videos or websites. EdPuzzle is another of the apps I use that allows me to assign videos that have questions included. This tool allows me to have a feedback of which are the students who have seen the video and what time they have dedicated to it, as well as the answers to the questions. The application has allowed me to complement the experimental teaching of the Chemistry laboratories.

Nutrition carries the information necessary for health and wellbeing. In that case, knowing the major nutritional components of a healthy diet and the impact on overall wellbeing is as important as knowing the implications of dietary habits and outcomes. This service-learning project offers to the student the opportunity to advance their knowledge of diet and nutrition and hence develop interventions by utilizing skills and learned materials from general chemistry I course. It is intended to enable students build creative confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills as they learn and reflect on the correlation between diet, wellness, and disease. Through this effort, students could use a real-life connection in chemistry to make a difference as they partner to educate their audience on modifiable behaviors that abrogate poor health outcomes, like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. This work presents the student progress and accomplishment over semesters as they apply the knowledge of important connections between chemistry and nutrition. From the calculations of calories of core nutrients to the preparation of nutrition labels and the informed determinations, students are excited to indulge in lifechanging activities that are rooted in their own creativity.
