Exquisite Corpse - Topic Narrowing Activity
Notes on this activity:
- Tell students to maintain the subject in their responses
- Write as legibly as possible

- An optional additional step would be to have students research the topic in the 4th quadrant in a database

Sorting Machine Activity
Sorting Machine Activity - use this to help students understand different sources types and how they fit into their assignment's source requirements.

We tested a variation of this in IDeA but instead of doing it as an entire class, like the instructions suggest, we broke into teams of 3-4. This seemed to work well for having discussions about how others in the group were categorizing items AND may be easier logistically since the original instructions call for a round table set up.

Access the sources used for this activity on SharePoint or choose your own. You want every student in each group to have a couple of sources to review. If you have a class of 20 you will need to break them into 5 groups of 4 and will need to print 5 copies of the sources.

Clark State has great LibGuide on the differences between primary (evidence), secondary (analysis), and tertiary (summary) sources.

Why Use Sources? Activity
"This exercise, created by Dr. Susan Schorn, Writing Flag Coordinator for the University of Texas, teaches students why they should cite sources and how evidence strengthens their arguments. This is usually assigned as a group exercise in class but could also be assigned as a take-home exercise."
Valuing Everyday Information Needs
