The Invention of Surgery The Invention of Surgery is history of surgery that explains the dramatic, world-changing progress and highlights the personalities of the discipline's most dynamic historical figures. It links together the lives of the pioneering scientists who first understood what causes disease and how surgery could powerfully intercede in people's lives, and then shows how the rise of surgery intersected with many of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the last century.

Foundations of Operative Surgery Technical expertise in the operating theatre remains a hallmark of surgical practice. Theatre etiquette and instrument handling skills are highly specific to the specialty of surgery, and trainees need to quickly become familiar with them. This book introduces operative technique in an original way. It first discusses the roles and responsibilities of the surgical trainee and explains some the unwritten rules of behaviour in the operating theatre. It then brings a unique approach to teaching operative surgery by describing operationsas a series of generic manoeuvres which, when mastered and put together in the correct order, will allow any procedure to be performed - and prove useful across subspecialty boundaries. This approach is illustrated using clear diagrams and full colour photographs. It is further enhanced through a free DVD comprising 55 high quality video clips taken from live operating sessions which illustrate the various techniques described inside.

Medical Ethics The area where science, medicine, and ethics merge is a complicated one. Medicine seeks to treat and heal, science seeks to cure, and ethics is what's needed to keep all those processes in check. With that comes several controversial topics, which this book examines for the reader. Essays cover topics such as the health care system, medical research, end-of-life decisions, government intervention, organ donation, reproductive technologies, surrogacy, and the death penalty.

The Picture of Health Film and literature have long been mined for interesting examples and case studies in order to teach biomedical ethics to students. This volume presents a collection of about 80 very brief, accessible essays written by international experts from medicine, social sciences, and the humanities, all of whom have experience using film in their teaching of medical ethics. Each essay focuses on a single scene and the ethical issues it raises, and the volume editors have provided strict guidelines for what each essay must do, while also allowing for some creative freedom. While some of the films are obvious candidates with medical themes -- "Million Dollar Baby", "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" -- some are novel choices, such as "Pan's Labyrinth" or "As Good as it Gets". The book will contain several general introductory chapters to major sections, and a complete filmography and cross-index at the end of the book where readers can look up individual films or ethical issues.
